History of Nirakar Hostel

Shree Nirakar High School has been zealously doing the noble work of bringing out excellence in its pupils. In the nineteen seventies and the eighties the school flourished in every sphere be it sports, cultural activities, or academics. However after schooling years there were no institutions in Canacona , which could cater to the educational needs of these pupils. Compelled by circumstances and a determination to obtain higher education many of these pupils migrated to towns and cities which could fulfil their educational aspiration. Later many of these students took up jobs and settled down at their place of work. As a consequence, number of pupils studying in the school began dwindling which posed a great threat to the survival of the school in the late nineteen nineties.

So in the year 1999 a few boys from Khotigao and Gaondongeri were provided with accommodation at the residence of Mr.Prashant Naik. Mrs.Maya Lolyekar volunteered to arrange the meals for these boys. Knowing the predicament faced by the school Mr.Gopalkrishna Prabhugaonkar, a retired teacher of the school generously placed his house at our disposal to run a girls hostel in 2005. Keshav Seva Sadan provided their valuable services and the hostel was run by their caretaker Mrs.Prabha Acharya. However when Keshav Seva Sadan shifted their base, the management felt a need to open a hostel of their own.

So,in the year 2007 it was a dream come true with a full fledged hostel for girls and boys.Selfless services were rendered by particularly the then school Headmaster, Mr.Jairam Gaonkar and school teachers like Mrs.Meena Varik and Mr.Nilesh Prabhudesai. Many ex-students and well wishers even extended financial assistance to some needy students.Mrs.Sudha Prabhugaonakr,Mrs.Urmila Loliyekar were a part of hostel committee. Our caretaking staff,Mrs.Shreya Shanbhag , Mrs.Sheela Mahalsekar and Mr.Kishor Padkar have been painstakingly providing care to the inmates. Many students who came from educationally disadvantaged background have successfully completed their schooling and have even come out with flying colours.

Nirakar Hostel Today

Today, the hostel facility is availed by almost forty students coming from different parts of Goa and from varying backgrounds. It provides dormitory kind of accommodation with all the basic amenities for the inmates at an affordable rate. Every year the facilities of the hostel are upgraded to meet the growing demands of students. Inmates of the hostel carry out their own little chores which teaches them lessons of self- reliance. Though the school has no problem of strength today, we are keen to run it to serve the needy students particularly coming from remote areas.
